Jonathan and Emily didn’t really plan on becoming wine merchants. When we arrived in Paris on one-year working holiday visas back in 2009, we thought we’d spend 12 months eating and sightseeing before bidding France adieu.
Then Jonathan got a part-time job in a wine shop. We didn’t quite realise it at the time, but that shop, La Dernière Goutte, is considered by many to be among the best in the country. Jonathan started his wine education reading the sides of the boxes he was stacking in the cellar by day, and continued into the evenings as he shared bottles with colleagues, Parisian restaurateurs, and winemakers who visited from all around the country. (Emily was a willing participant in this, too.) We got the chance to travel the country, visiting vineyards, tasting wines, eating and drinking with the people that made them, and making France our home.
Seven years and two babies later, we arrived back in our native Aotearoa. We missed the wines we drank in France, and we missed the people that made them. We wanted to build a connection to them even from the other side of the world. So The Last Drop - named for that shop in Paris - was born.
We’ve since been lucky enough to partner with some of the best winemakers in New Zealand too, continuing our kaupapa of dealing in organic and biodynamic wines, made to the highest standards by people we know and admire.
If you’d like to know more about us and our wines, talking about them is our second favourite thing to drinking them, so don’t hesitate to be in touch!
